Winter Skin Tips for Rosacea and Redness-prone Skin

When the wintery months roll in, it can be a difficult time for people with Rosacea and skin that is prone to redness. What is normally a rosy complexion can quickly go to bright red and inflamed, and even get a little bumpy or feel raw to the touch. Untreated, it can be quite painful, and the world seems crazy enough without skin gripes leaving us feeling self-conscious, when we could otherwise be getting on with life. With a little self-care and a few minor adjustments to life, here and there, you can deal with the effects of Rosacea, prevent flare-ups and get back to doing you. Here’s a few tips to help you along the way.

1. Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise.

I’m sure you’ve heard it a thousand times before, but as your skin dries in the winter cold, it becomes more irritated. If you’re suffering with Rosacea or reddened skin, it is vital to keep your skin well-moisturised throughout the day, to combat potential cracking skin and dry patches. Make sure to use products that were designed for sensitive skin, and that avoid ingredients commonly known to irritate or dehydrate the skin. Opt for gentle, moisturising products at every stage of your skincare routine and reapply throughout the day if necessary.

2. Temperature Control

Inside and outside, temperature control is vital to managing the effects of rosacea and skin redness. Try to maintain a relatively consistent temperature throughout your day and don’t stray too far into the “too hot” or the “too cold.” It can be tempting, when you get into your car on a frosty winter morning, to get the heating going and blast it into your face before your nose turns blue. Avoid this if you can! That full-on temperature change can cause a flare-up. Likewise, a hot cup of hot chocolate or tea can be incredibly tempting on a chilly winter’s afternoon. Don’t dive straight into your brew, but rather wait until it has cooled a little, so as not to risk allowing the hot steam to blistering your skin. Finally, wear breathable clothing that is layered, so you can quickly adjust to your situation when you start to feel steamy.

3. Inside to Outside and Vice Versa

Piggybacking off of temperature control, it is important to manage the changes in exposure that your face will experience as you go about your business. The outside weather will be nippy and biting, while the indoors can be dry from fireplaces and central heating. Make your way from one extreme to the other by covering your face as you transition. Use a scarf, a hood or a snood when making your way outside and avoid extreme heat sources, such as the heater or oven, for a time once you get back in.

4. Sun Protection

UV rays from sunlight are the single biggest trigger for rosacea skin types. It might seem counterintuitive when you’re in the thick of winter and haven’t seen the sun for days, but it is absolutely vital in order to avoid reddening of the skin. This can be done in two ways – the first being obvious – use sun cream! This, ideally, should be done all year round, so don’t leave it during winter. Use SPF30, at least, to help keep those pesky rays at bay. The second way is by physically keeping direct sunlight out of your face. You can choose a stylish woollen winter hat with a brim for when you’re outside, and remember to keep your sun visor down when you’re in the car for a significant amount of time.

5. Cover Up (Gently) If You Desire

We don’t think anyone should be embarrassed by their rosy cheeks, rosacea or redness, but we also know that it makes many of our beautiful customers feel insecure.
